Welcome!

Hello! As you may know by now, my name is Sydney Martin. I am currently a student at the University of Houston and I’m studying marketing with a minor in management. I’m so excited to be starting this blog! My mission in life and in my career is to use marketing and technology/social media to inspire others and help them realize their purpose. I hope this blog is an outlet for me to do so!

A few fun things about me: I love baking, plants, music, books, fashion, and marketing. I’ve done a lot of reflecting lately on why I love these things so much, other than the obvious fact that they bring me joy, and I came to the realization that they are usually the reason why I feel connected to my friends and family, and they are typically how I make connections with new people. That is why I plan on using this platform to talk about the things I enjoy. I will be mostly writing about the marketing field and things I’m learning in school, but I will also be analyzing my favorite albums, reviewing my favorite books, sharing my fashion looks and tips, and overall discussing what is going on in my personal and professional life!

When developing ideas for this blog, it wasn’t difficult to list my favorite things or the topics I love talking about with my friends. The difficulty lay in how I should approach making this site, how to reach people, and of course, what to name my blog! I became quite frustrated after spending much of my time going through words or titles that just seemed too complicated and wordy.

In the midst of my discouragement, I went out for boba with my friend, Riane. While sitting with her, discussing the direction I wanted to take my blog and how I did not know what to name it, we started brainstorming ideas and she threw out “Simply Syd.” It was exactly what I wanted this blog to be about. To put it simply (pun intended), the things I am passionate about and using these things to connect with and encourage others. If it weren’t for my conversation with Riane, I possibly would have spent many more hours going through names I was unhappy with. So, thank you Riane for the inspiration and encouragement!

I think it is only fair if I warn whoever is reading this that I am not a writer. I have always struggled in school to write strongly on projects or essays. However, I love to write. I think it is a necessary skill to have, and it is a great way to express your emotions. So, my goal is to improve my writing skills through this blog! As author Ann Handley simply states in her book Everybody Writes, “the key to becoming a better writer is to write.” I believe we all possess the skills we desire to have somewhere in us, we just have to learn how to tap into those skills and utilize them. Perfection is not the goal, but rather growth and improvement.

All in all, I hope this is a space for learning, community, and professional development. If you feel compelled to do so, please leave comments or send me feedback on any of my platforms linked below!
